Yaoi
Part of my job involves entering book information from publisher's catalogues into a database. While doing this, I recently discovered that there is a whole genre of manga that focuses on male/male homosexual relations. It's called yaoi (pronounced yay-o-ee). It is mainly marketed towards females.
Most of the stories seem to involve pretty young men who get involved either at school or at work. I haven't read any of it other than the blurbs. I am tempted to read some manga, not just yaoi, to see what all the fuss is about.
I was heavily into comics in the 80s, especially Love and Rockets so I can understand some of the draw.
As a person who hasn't read any manga, I find that all the art looks identical and so simplistic and that the stories don't have all that much variety. I am probably wrong and I would love someone who is a fan to convince me otherwise.
But, I was surprised to find out about yaoi, and how popular it is. I haven't heard any great outcry from the bigots about how it's "ruining our children." Then again, they probably haven't heard about it.
