Thanks, katyzzz, you're right. There are a couple of definitions I missed. In accordance to literature, a canon can be the recognized genuine works of a particular author, or literary works as part of a school curriculum. In music a canon can be a piece with different parts taking up the same theme successively, either at the same or at a different pitch
