Atmospheric Inversion
Rising smoke forms a ceiling over a valley due to a an inversion, an overlying layer of warmer air.

atmospheric inversion (n) - reversal of normal thermal conditions as occurs when warmer air prevents cooler, denser surface air from rising. Pollutants can become trapped in the cool air.
